By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The final two Premier League of Belize playoff clubs will be decided on Saturday night in the games played in Independence and Orange Walk.
With Verdes and Port Layola already over the hump; Altitude, Benque Viejo United, and Progresso are battling for the remaining berths.
Verdes totalled 28 points with their 3-0 over Progresso on Sunday, November 12 becoming the first club to qualify to the playoffs and as the top seeded side. Port Layola had to wait until Thursday, November 23, to face the Belmopan Bandits whom they blasted 4-0 totalling 24 points and also advancing to the playoffs.
Two of Saturday night’s four games, all being played at 7:30 pm, will determine the other two qualifying teams among Altitude, Benque Viejo United, and Progresso. Altitude and Benque Viejo United have 22 points while Progresso have 21.
Altitude are playing against Verdes at the Michael Ashcroft in Independence while Progresso are hosting Benque Viejo United at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk.
Due to a much better goal difference than both rivals, Altitude have the best chances of advancing to the semifinals.
Though they only need a draw against visiting Verdes, they could even advance if they lose. If both Altitude and Benque lose, they both stay at 22 points and Altitude would more than likely qualify based on the +13 goal difference compared to Benque Viejo United’s +11. Should they fall, and Progresso United draw with Benque United, their +13 goal difference compared to Progresso’s +9, would give them the ticket to the playoffs, unless they lose by five goals or more.
A win or draw over Progresso qualifies Benque Viejo United. A loss would more than likely disqualify Benque United unless Altitude also lose and their goal difference miraculously ends up being better than Altitude’s. That’s a tough call because Altitude not only have a two-goal advantage, they have also scored more goals so far.
Progresso will qualify if they win. A loss puts them out. A draw would only work if Altitude lose by five or more goals to Verdes.
Since Progresso have the least probability of advancing, considering their fifth place rank, they have the advantage of playing at home against Benque Viejo United with whom they drew 2-2 in the first round.
The other two games, which have no bearing on the playoffs, are for better positioning in the standings. Port Layola host Wagiya (4 points) at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City and Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) (13 points) receive the Belmopan Bandits (8 points) at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
