2023 champion Derrick Chavarria aims to win 33rd Krem’s New Year’s Day Cycling Classic

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Derrick Chavarria won the 32nd Annual Krem’s New Year’s Day Cycling Classic on January 1, 2023 and is now intent on repeating last year’s feat on Monday, January 1, 2024. But so are the cyclists who trailed Chavarria in this year’s race.

Riding for Team FAL, Chavarria crossed the finish line in three hours, 54 minutes, and 48 seconds (3:54:48), 26 seconds ahead of second place Jyven Gonzalez of G-Flow (3:55:14) and 28 seconds over Lovell Cycling Team’s Giovanni Lovell (3:55:16).

In 2022, Chavarria could have won the 96-mile race that runs on the Philip Goldson Highway from the Belize-Mexico border to Belize City, but, the 501 Valvoline’s team plan, was for Chavarria to set it up for teammate Brandon Cattouse.

Chavarria and Gonzalez were also the top two Under-23 riders to complete the race. Lovell won the Elite category.

501 Valvoline’s Joshua Fuller led a four-man group that crossed the finish line 3:55:40, Fuller was fourth, Joslyn Chavarria Jr rode in fifth, American John DeLong captured sixth, and Westrac Alliance’s Eric Trapp was seventh. (7th). DeLong won the Masters Category 1.

Dejuan Hyde of Rolling Shattaz-BZ Boyz was eight in 4:01:38.

L39gion of Los Angeles’ Justin Williams finished ninth in 4:01:41.

0501 Valvoline’s Oscar Quiroz rounded off the Top 10 in 4:02:50.

Rolling Shattaz-BZ Boyz’s Dwight Lopez won the Masters Category 3 race. KULTURE/SDP’s Kent Gabourel was second and unattached rider Robert Liam Stewart took third.

Team Gonz’s Keiron Ysaguirre claimed the Masters Categories 4/5 top spot, followed by Kulture/SDP’s Vallan Symms.

32 of 68 riders completed the 2023.
