BSCFA membership blocking Philip Goldson Highway as leaders ask for more time

By Aaron Humes: Tensions continue to simmer as what was a 2 p.m. deadline has now extended to 4:30 in the evening.

Members of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) are still awaiting, impatiently, word of the final obstacles removed for the signing of an interim commercial agreement.

The initiative to block the Philip Goldson Highway starting earlier this afternoon appears to be coming from frustrated cañeros rather than the membership who have been asking for more time, though it is not clear whether they fell they are any closer to a signed agreement.

The BSCFA membership have defied complaints from both the miller and fellow associations who they insist they are fighting on behalf of, but who have threatened to sue if they are prevented from delivering cane. They say they will only block cane trucks from going south so as to avoid inconvenience to motorists.

Latest word is that some BSCFA members are headed to Orange Walk to find out for themselves what is going on.
