Premier League of Belize: Harrison Roches leads Wagiya to 1-0 over Police Benque in 2023-24 Closing Championship opening

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Wagiya got off to a good start defeating Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) 1-0 in their opening match of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2023-24 Closing Championship at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday, January 13, 2024.

Veteran Harrison Roches converted the lone goal of the match in the seventh minute. Wagiya protected the lead and the goal held up until the long whistle for the southern club to take the victory over the Benque side.

Wagiya are coming off one of their worst seasons, having finished in last place in the Opening Championship. The good start gives them hopes of a better performance in the Closing Championship.

For Police Benque, the start is a stumble they didn’t expect. In the Opening Championship they finished in sixth place ahead of the Bandits and Wagiya and are expecting to move up in this championship.

In the other opening weekend matches, champions Altitude slipped past subchampions Port Layola 3-2 at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, Benque Viejo United defeated Progresso 1-0 at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town, and Verdes blanked the Belmopan Bandits 3-0 at the Norman Broaster Stadium.
