By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Altitude beat subchampions Port Layola, but couldn’t stop Verdes who beat them 1-0 on their own homefield, the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, on Saturday, January 20.

Krisean Lopez converted the only goal in the 28th minute to give Verdes the win after two consecutive losses to the new Premier League of Belize (PLB) Champions.

Verdes now lead the PLB Closing Championship with six points along with Benque Viejo United.

Altitude, with three points to their credit, dropped to fourth place behind Port Layola and ahead of Wagiya and the Belmopan Bandits, who also have three points.

Altitude eliminated Verdes in the semifinals of the Opening Season and started off well last week dropping Port Layola 3-2, but stumbled against the opponents who are their biggest threat in the battle for a CONCACAF Champions Cup berth.

In the other matches, Benque Viejo United beat Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) 1-0, Bandits shocked Progresso 2-1, and Port Loyola bombed Wagiya 5-2.
