By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Defending champions Benny’s Belize Hurricanes defeated the Orange Walk Running Rebels 89-71 on Friday night at the Belize City Civic Center recording their second win in the Belize Elite Basketball League.

Captain Victor Evans scored 16 points and collected five rebounds to lead his team to victory. Sidibe Bourama added 15 and six rebounds, Jamell Harris contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Glency Lopez scored 11 points. Marquise Cunningham added ten points.

The Running Rebels’ Matthew Young was the game’s top scorer with 21 points. He also raked 12 rebounds. James Stanback scored 14 points for the Orange Walk team. Brian White snatched 11 rebounds while scoring seven points.

The Running Rebels dropped to a 1-1 record.

The BEBL championship continues on Saturday night in Dangriga and Belmopan.

The Griga Dream Ballers are hosting the Western Ballaz in a clash that features two teams that lost their opening games. Both are eager to record a win when they meet at the Russell ‘Chiste’ Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga.

The third match of the weekend gets played in Belmopan where the homestanding Belmopan Trojans will face the Belize City Defenders at the UB Gym. Both teams won their opening games last week; the Trojans over the Western Ballaz in San Ignacio while the Defenders beat the Tiger Sharks in Belize City.

Both games tip off at 9:00 pm.
