Lobster takes a break – fishing season closes next week

By Aaron Humes: Notice has been given by the Fisheries Department that fishing of Caribbean spiny lobster will end next week on February 29, as regulated by Statutory Instrument 128 of 2021.

The closed season for lobster begins on March 1 and ends June 30, as established by the Organization for Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector (OSPESCA).

Fishers and members of the public are advised that you are prohibited from having any lobster during this period and traps should not be in fishing grounds during this period. Violations will be prosecuted under the Fisheries Resources Act, Chapter 210 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2020.

The Fisheries Department will actively enforce the removal of traps from the waters during this period.
