Belize-flagged ship sinks in Red Sea after Houthi attack

Posted: Saturday, March 2, 2024. 12:05 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: A ship flagged by Belize, the Rubymar, has sunk in the Red Sea after being attacked by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on February 18th. The ship was carrying fertilizer and fuel, and its sinking is raising concerns about environmental damage to the Red Sea.

The Houthis have been targeting ships in the Red Sea in recent months in response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The sinking of the Rubymar is the first time a vessel has been completely destroyed in these attacks.

The Rubymar was struck by a Houthi anti-ship ballistic missile in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial waterway linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The ship was abandoned for 12 days after the attack, and plans had been made to try and tow it to a safe port. However, the vessel was ultimately unable to be saved and sank on Friday.

The sinking of the Rubymar is likely to have a significant impact on shipping in the Red Sea. Many ships have already turned away from the route due to the Houthi attacks, and the sinking is likely to lead to further detours and higher insurance rates. This could potentially drive up global inflation and affect aid shipments to the region.

The internationally recognized government of Yemen has called the sinking of the Rubymar “an unprecedented environmental disaster.” The Houthis have not yet commented on the incident.
