By Rubén Morales Iglesias:  Belizean cyclist Carlton Robinson of Team Belize was leading the 2nd Vuelta Maya in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico after winning the first two stages on Friday and Saturday with a combined time of four hours, 55 minutes and 53 seconds. And with a lead of 22 seconds, he was the favourite to win it all on Sunday after the time trial.

On Friday, Robinson set a new record by 14 minutes and 23 seconds when he won the 75-mile Stage 1 in 2:46:06. Then on Saturday, he clinched Stage 2 in 2:09:47.

Belizean Edgar Nissan Arana, riding for Mexican Team SKY, is second in the General Classification behind Robinson with a time of 4:56:15. Arana finished third on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday he clocked 2:46:16 and on Saturday his time was 2:09:59.

A third Belizean, Josyln Chavarria of Team Santino’s Belize, is fourth in the General Classification in 4:56:41. Chavarria finished in the 46-man peloton led by Robinson on Friday in 2:46:21 and fourth in Stage 2 on Saturday in 2:10:20.

The other Belizean in the Elite race, Byron Pope of Team Belize, is currently 11th in the General Classification with a time of 4:59:03. Pope, like Chavarria, Arana, and Robinson finished in the 46-man lead peloton on Friday and finished 11th in Stage 2 on Saturday in 2:12:42.

Santino Castillo, who leads Team Santino’s Belize (including Belizean and Mexican riders), said the organizers goofed when they included Brandon Cattouse, Giovanni Lovell and Wasani Castro in the results for Stage 1 as the three, though they had registered for the race, aren’t competing in the race.

Santino himself placed fifth in the Master C Category in Stage 1 clocking 2:05:19, the same time as the winner, his Santinos’ teammate, Mexican Juan Chak Medina. On Saturday he fell behind and finished seventh in 2:14:26. He was seventh overall after the first two stages in 4:19:45. His teammate Medina led with a time of 4:16:17.
