International News: Venezuela orders closure of diplomatic missions in Ecuador following raid on Mexican Embassy

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro said he had ordered the closure of his country’s diplomatic missions in Ecuador after a raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito.

Maduro said he had ordered “diplomatic personnel to return to Venezuela immediately… until international law is restored in Ecuador.”

Honduras has since also recalled the country’s senior diplomat from Ecuador.

“We strongly condemn” the raid, said Honduran President Xiomara Castro.

Several Latin American Governments including Belize have expressed solidarity with Mexico and condemned the actions by Ecuador following the April 5^th raid.

Authorities in Ecuador stormed the Mexican Embassy to arrest former Ecuadoran vice president Jorge Glas, who is wanted on corruption charges and had been granted asylum by Mexico.
