Belmopan mother who shot alleged robber in self-defense faces DPP review

By Horace Palacio: A Belmopan mother who shot an alleged robber in self-defense now faces a review by Belize’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The DPP will determine whether the shooting was legally justified.

The incident occurred 11 days ago in Independence Park when Gilda Abadi and her daughter were returning to their vehicle. According to police reports, 49-year-old Ronald Gibson approached the pair armed with a knife. Abadi, fearing for her own safety and the safety of her daughter, drew her licensed firearm and shot Gibson in the stomach. Gibson initially survived but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams commented on the case, stating, “Well, from our indications, the investigation is showing that lady acted in defense for herself and her child”. Williams further supported Abadi, emphasizing that “The man accosted them to rob them. She ordered him to stop. He continued to make moves towards her. Generally, a man is stronger than a woman…He certainly would have overpowered her, would have taken away that gun and maybe would have killed her.”

While Williams believes the case constitutes justifiable use of lethal force, he underscored that the ultimate decision rests with the DPP.
