By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Three people lost their lives and 2 more sustained injuries after a gunman opened fire around 10:30 on Sunday night at the University of Virginia.
This morning, authorities were still on a manhunt for the suspect, Reuters report.
Police were searching the University’s campus for an “armed and dangerous” suspect who is wanted in the shooting.
Police have identified student Christopher Darnell Jones as the suspect in the shooting.
University of Virginia police advised students and staff to shelter in place until further notice.
School President Jim Ryan said he is “heartbroken” by the shooting and announced that classes had been canceled for today.
“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,” he wrote.
Authorities say that the suspect was wearing a “burgundy jacket, blue jeans and red shoes”, and may have been driving a black SUV.
Jones who is a student at the school was listed as a player on the school’s football team in 2018.
Statistics show that school shootings have reached a record high in the United States.
