By Aaron Humes: With Belize one of the few countries inviting Americans to visit as of October 1, the U.S. State Department has lowered it’s level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ warning for Belize to a level 3 ‘Reconsider Travel’, according to Travel Offpath.
Belize had been hit with a level 4 travel warning in August due to an increase in cases of COVID-19, particularly in Ambergris Caye and the Orange Walk District.
While those numbers have increased to more than 2,200 total cases at the start of October, the number of active cases has fallen to around 600 and is relatively stable. The new warning went into effect on Monday, October 5.
The new warning continues to mention high levels of crime, including sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder, even during daylight hours and in tourist areas and special mention is given to Southside Belize City.
American tourists are encouraged to limit their interactions with locals and stay within resort areas to help protect the population and reduce the spread of COVID-19. A handful have taken advantage of the re-opening of the International Airport last Thursday as the high season closes in.
Belize received upwards of 350,000 American tourists a year prior to the pandemic and is looking to revive its tourism economy.
Beaches, resorts, restaurants, and tourist services have all resumed operations as of October 1st.
Belize is now welcoming American tourists with new COVID-19 entry protocols. All arriving U.S. citizen must follow the below requirements.
