Guatemala’s Foreign Minister to Belize: “We are neighbour countries and we are friends”

By Aaron Humes: Guatemalan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pedro Brolo Villa, affirmed the less belligerent tone Guatemala is taking toward Belize after four years of rhetoric and confrontational behavior from former President Jimmy Morales and his team.

“We are neighbor countries and we are friends so we must solve [our problems] in a peaceful manner and we need to solidify the challenges we are facing,” Minister Brolo Villa told reporters at the press call following his inaugural meeting with Belizean counterpart Eamon Courtenay. Courtenay himself reiterated the desire for Belize and Guatemala to continue their friendly, neighborly relationship, even while each country defends their national territory in peaceful ways and using the offices of the OAS.

Brolo Villa said the countries anticipate the support of the Organization of American States (OAS) in reviving the Confidence Building Measures and other initiatives between the countries, and with their help, the countries will reach a modus vivendi.

He offered his thanks to Courtenay and to the OAS for this critical meeting.
