Monday, October 27, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting:  Earlier this month the Belize City Council and Central Government launch of a fourth phase of the Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Project in the area of Douglas Jones Street, Cinderella Plaza, Baymen Avenue and Newtown Barracks.

It will see the construction of an underground canal linking the drains in the area to the Caribbean Sea.

The project is expected to take eight months and for those who have been suffering inconveniences while driving through the Mayor says the outcome will benefit all.

He warned that while streets will not be closed to vehicular traffic the work will be ongoing and so the Council will re-route as necessary.

Also delaying construction was a broken water main that had to be fixed two weeks ago.

In related news, as infrastructure works continue at an aggressive pace across the Old Capital, issues are still to be addressed in certain areas where already concreted streets are beginning to show signs of degradation.

A section of New Road, part of the north approach to the Belcan Bridge and part of Cemetery Road have all been identified as worn down.

According to Mayor Darrell Bradley, a timeline is being worked on to facilitate construction with regard to the Cemetery Road area, but the contractor is somewhat busy with other projects.

Nonetheless, the Council has ensured that residents will see the areas re-done.

The contractor, not identified, is presently working on Princess Margaret Drive as a subcontractor with Cisco Construction and previously did Treasury Lane and Southern Foreshore/Courthouse Wharf to high standard.

Overall, the Mayor says about 95% of the completed concrete streets have matched expectations, and while perfection was never promised, the Council will ensure that the others are satisfactorily repaired.

The Council is closing in on 130 streets concreted in a nearly three-year span.
