By Chrisbert Garcia: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) hosted its third annual Gender Awards on November 25th in honor of the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women,” where five top performing programs supported by the fund and making a difference in women’s lives, were celebrated.
Recipient of this year’s IFAD Gender Award for Latin America and the Caribbean was the Belize Rural Finance Programme for its work in gender equality, women empowerment and increasing financial literacy in rural areas since 2009. It has also worked to establish gender-sensitive practices in the credit unions supported by the programme.
The programme acknowledged and expressed sincere gratitude to Debra Lewis for her important contributions in spearheading the development of the Programme’s Gender Initiatives, the staff of the Programme Management Unit, the Belize Credit Union League and the six credit unions participating in the Programme.
Finally, to the respective Microfinance Field Officers of the Credit Unions for their efforts in the achievement of the Programme’s objectives.
