La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge underway

PATRICK E. JONES Reporting: The banks of the Macal River in San Ignacio/Santa Elena was abuzz with activity early this morning. It was time for the start of the 16th annual La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge.

Hundreds of paddlers suited up for the biggest canoe race in Belize which started from underneath the historic Hawksworth Bridge.

The race will culminate in Belize City on Monday afternoon.

The first leg of the race takes the paddlers from San Ignacio to Banana Bank.
