Friday, June 27, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Deon Bruce faces extradition to the United States on murder charges following a decision of the Supreme Court upholding that of Chief Magistrate Ann-Marie Smith.
However he was given a reprieve today as Justice Courtney Abel granted a stay of execution so that the decision can be appealed to the Court of Appeal.
Bruce’s attorney Audrey Matura-Shepherd said the stay was necessary to ensure that efforts to go through with the extradition are put on pause while Bruce exhausts all his legal options.
Justice Abel had ruled against Bruce in a first-of-its-kind judicial review of the Chief Magistrate’s decision.
The case has been formally appealed and is expected to come up in due course. Bruce can continue appealing to the Caribbean Court of Justice, but the final say on his extradition belongs to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who earlier this year declined a request to extradite Rhett Fuller on murder charges, citing a need to take care of his family here.
