Speakers laud Belizean progress on Independence Day
Monday, September 21st, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: Official Independence Day ceremonies have begun under overcast skies in Belmopan, with a light rain shower overseeing the Guard of Honor mounted by the Belize Defence Force (BDF).
Opening the ceremony, Mayor of Belmopan Khalid Belisle noted that he has never seen a Belize which was not independent as he was born a few months before Independence Day.
As a young person, he said, it would not do well to forget the sacrifices made by older generations to bring Belize to where it is today – a nation committed to development, confident in itself and competitive in the world.
Describing Belize’s journey as “colourful, with much progress but a few backward steps”, he urged the audience to avoid excess and remember that there is no agenda but the Belizean agenda.
Appearing on behalf of co-chair Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Diane Haylock reminded that we sought the right to live as Belizeans, and slowly we have been reaching the goals our original leaders set.
And even amid continuing challenges, she said, we remain firm in our promise of a transformed, renewed Belize.
The ceremony continues with main addresses from opposite numbers Francis Fonseca and Dean Barrow.
