By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize is cutting spending on the Fire Department by about $1 Million. This has caused concern that an already overwhelmed fire department will be less equipped to efficiently respond to fires.
In 2015, there were 165 reported fires across Belize. Many families lost their homes and belongings and had to start over. Many families mourned the deaths of their loved ones as their homes went ablaze.
Perhaps among the most tragic fires was the blaze that claimed the life of 11-year-old Aaron Gabourel and would later claim two of his cousins, Empress Hamilton, 9, and Ian Sambula, 4. The deadly inferno left the Hamilton family devastated.
Also among the blazes was the complete destruction of the Iconic Chateau Caribbean hotel. San Pedro town also suffered extensive damages when fire gutted almost an entire block of homes in June of 2016.
On Wednesday, a two story wooden house was completely destroyed by fire in Santa Elena town.
Residents claim the Fire Department was slow in responding and said the truck was ill-equipped as it ran out of water quickly. By the time the truck got back, a concrete structure that was beside the blazing structure was already engulfed in flames.
