By BBN Staff: The Atlantic Hurricane season begins in June and ends in November each year.

While we cannot control hurricanes, we are able to protect our property and lives by being prepared.

The Government of Belize press office offered some tips during this season.

Tip #1: During the hurricane season, fisher folks are strongly advised to stay informed via radio, listen to the weather bulletin before venturing out to sea. Move your boat to safe harbor early.

According to the National Hurricane Center, “storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tides. This rise in water level can cause extreme flooding in coastal areas particularly when storm surge coincides with normal high tide, resulting in storm tides reaching up to 20 feet or more in some cases.”

The Government Press Office encourages all to be vigilant during the entire hurricane season, as storms can form and strengthen in little to no time.
