The macaws were found just in time by rangers from Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD). The two chicks were fifty days old. They were handed over to the Belize Forestry Department.
The two poached chicks were then treated to specialized veterinary care and a complete health check by the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic (BWRC).
The macaws responded well to their rehydration and their check-up revealed no major concerns.
After twenty-four hours, the two macaws were taken back into the Chiquibul.
According to BWRC, FCD does nest monitoring which led to a foster nest in the Chiquibul.
Poaching of scarlet macaws is a major issue in the Chiquibul and more assistance is needed to protect the parrot nests.
If you have what it takes to camp in the most basic conditions in the Chiquibul and are interested in volunteering for 1 week of nest monitoring please contact BWRC by email [email protected].
