Rene Montero, Minister of Works: Hernandez won the contract because he was the most qualified

Posted: Tuesday, February 19, 2019. 11:50 am CST.

BBN Staff: Yesterday, the Government of Belize and Imer Hernandez Development Limited signed a $19 million contract for phase 3 of the George Price Highway rehabilitation project which includes road upgrade from Blackman Eddy Village to the Santa Elena Town roundabout in the Cayo District.

Hernandez who is the nephew of former Deputy Prime Minister of Belize, Gaspar Vega has been widely criticized for building poor roads from previous contracts given to his company by the Government of Belize.

In an interview with 7 News yesterday, Minister of Works, Rene Montero informed that Hernandez won the contract because he was the most qualified.

According to Montero, among bids from 7 contractors, Hernandez presented all the requirements that the bank needed including engineers and work experience.

Yesterday, the PUP issued a statement calling on the Integrity Commission and the contractor general to review and examine all road contracts that have been authorized by both Minister Montero and CEO Errol Gentle.
