By BBN Staff: Following reports that England is considering plans to build a post-Brexit military in the Caribbean, preferably Belize, Minister of National Security John Saldivar told the media this week that the government has not received any such communication from the British government but added that Belize would be open to the idea.
According to Saldivar, the only recent discussions in terms of military cooperation between Belize and Britain have been to increase training capacity in the country. He said the British are very satisfied with Belize’s terrain and the assistance from the Belize Defense Force (BDF). Saldivar said he expects that training presence to increase in the next few years.
He also said given the current situation with Guatemala, Belize would welcome some form of defense guarantee from the British, even in the form of a military base. “I’m sure our government would give it positive consideration,” Saldivar told the media.
According to a report from Guyana’s Stabroek News, England is considering building a base in either Guyana, Montserrat or Belize. “…there has been little or no planning to build a barracks in Guyana or Montserrat – but there does appear to be a scheme to upgrade Britain’s jungle warfare training camp in Belize,” the report said.
