What’s killing the fish down south?

Posted: Monday, June 10, 2019. 6:52 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: There are environmental concerns coming out of southern Belize this week, as a large number of dead fish have been seen popping up in the Sittee River.

Breaking Belize News was informed that the phenomenon began happening last week, and was discovered by a tour guide doing a canoe tour.

Residents in the area fear that there might have been chemicals dumped in the water, however, there hasn’t been any concrete evidence gathered to support the theory. Breaking Belize News (BBN) contacted the Department of the Environment (DOE) for comment; however, no response has been forthcoming.

While the month of June is still the low season for tourism, there are still tours going on in the area and with the high season about to pick up in July, the issue could pose a serious problem if prolonged.

The quality of the water and the fish in the area for consumption has also become a matter of concern.

BBN will be following up on this story and issuing an update as more information becomes available.
