“New price of Butane considers both sellers and consumers,” says Bureau of Standards

By BBN Staff: Today the Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS) announced a new pricing scheme for Liquified Petroleum Gas ( also referred to as Butane) at the wholesale and retail levels, as well as Butane sold for motor vehicles.

The pricing scheme sets a maximum wholesale price per gallon for quantities above 300 gallons but less than 3,000 gallons, as well as a wholesale price for quantities in excess of 3,000 gallons. The scheme, which sets a different price for each district based on several factors, also places a maximum price per pound for butane.

The maximum retail price per pound for butane sold to motorists ranges between $1.14 and $1.19, with the Corozal District having the lowest and Toledo District having the highest. The maximum retail price per gallon sold to motorists ranges between $5.18 and $5.41. This price range remains the same for households, restaurants, and hotels.

The maximum per pound wholesale prices for quantities under 3,000 gallons range between 92 cents and 97 cents, while the price for quantities over 3,000 gallons range between 70 cents and 75 cents. Maximum per gallon prices for quantities less than 3,000 gallons range between $4.18 and $4.41 and go to $3.18 and 43.41 for quantities above 3,000 gallons.

“One of the considerations was that there was no controlled price for the wholesale of butane,” explained Jose Trejo, Director of the BBS. “We wanted to create a margin so that that the people selling would be able to make a decent profit.”

Trejo said that the bureau also took the consumers into account when setting the margins, including the fact that no one is doing any weighing when motorists are buying butane for their vehicle. The new pricing scheme takes effect on Wednesday, June 12.
