Evo Morales: “I will return soon with more strength”

Posted: Wednesday, November 13, 2019. 10:27 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Former President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, landed in Mexico yesterday after being granted political asylum in the country.

On Morales’ Twitter account, he posted a photo of himself sleeping on the floor just two days after resigning from office.

Massive protests against suspected electoral fraud led to Morales’ resignation on Sunday.

After he arrived in Mexico, he thanked the country for saving his life but vowed to return home to Bolivia.

Morales also denounced what he calls a ‘coup’.

“It pains me to leave the country for political reasons, but I’ll always be concerned. I’ll return soon, with more strength and energy,” Morales said.

Several Latin American countries had closed their airspace to Morales’ jet.

Morales had claimed that he won the October vote but the results of the election were heavily disputed.

Morales is the country’s first indigenous president and longest-serving leader.

But in 2016, voters had rejected his proposal to allow him to seek another 5-year term in re-election.

Morales then won a court ruling, allowing him to run on the grounds that barring him would violate human rights.

After Sunday’s events, the White House issued a statement saying that his resignation should serve as a prelude to ending the rule of fellow Leftist regimes in Nicaragua and Venezuela.

“After nearly 14 years and his recent attempt to override the Bolivian constitution and the will of the people, Morales’s departure preserves democracy and paves the way for the Bolivian people to have their voices heard,” the White House said.

The United States Department of State has also issued an advisory for American citizens traveling to Bolivia because of the on-going unrest in the nation.
