Food vendor charged for wounding woman in video attack

Posted: Saturday, September 19, 2020. 8:28 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Eric Jones,41, has been identified by police as the man seen in a video assaulting a woman near Pound Yard Bridge in Belize City a week ago as other men, beer bottles in hand, simply looked on.

Jones, a food vendor, was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford on Friday for a single charge of common assault upon the woman, whom we will elect not to identify.

Jones, who appeared unrepresented, pleaded not guilty. Since there was no objection to bail, he was offered bail in the sum of $200 plus one surety which he met. He was ordered not to interfere with the complainant or any prosecution witnesses.

On September 12, Jones was seen choking the woman while pinning her against a wall. One of the men standing around even approaches Jones and exchanges a few words with him before “punching out” with him and walking away.

Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch (CIB) for Eastern Division, explained in a briefing on Friday that as part of the Police’s investigation, “We spoke to the female and she provided some information to the police but didn’t actually give a written statement; but in this case, there were other procedures that we used to continue with the matter.”

Supt. Cowo added, “we understand the incident was due to a bicycle that the suspect had given to the victim and she didn’t return it to him and hence the reason he attacked the person for the bicycle.”
