Laboratory Technologists say “NO” to salary cuts, willing to back up their words with actions

Posted: Monday, April 19, 2021. 6:46 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Association of Clinical Laboratory Science of Belize (ACLSB), the group of medical professionals that have been instrumental in Belize’s national pandemic response through the processing of COVID-19 tests, has joined the ever-growing number of groups that are opposing the Government of Belize’s (GOB’s) decision to cut teachers and public officers’ salaries by 10 percent.

The ACLSB said today that it is disappointed to have to start off the 2021 celebration of  Laboratory Technologists Week, a time where this group of professionals should be praised for their tieless sacrifices during the COVID-19 pandemic, facing the loss of income due to a salary cut and a three-year freeze on increments.

“Therefore it is through this medium that the  Medical Laboratory Scientists/Technologists, Laboratory Aides, Phlebotomists and the  Association of Clinical Laboratory Science of Belize wishes to inform the Government of Belize and the general public that we are saying a resounding No to Salary Cut and Increment Freeze, and thus are prepared to make necessary actions to reflect this decision,” the ACLSB said.

The association also pledged its support to the Belize Nurses Association, Public Service Union, and the rest of the Joint Union Negotiating Team discussing cost-cutting measures with GOB, in their decision to take industrial action against the government and encouraged Laboratory Technologists to lend their support whenever it is safely applicable for them to do so.
