Belize defeated 3-0 in Nicaragua, ending World Cup dream

By Aaron Humes: The Jaguars were knocked out of World Cup qualifying after a trying run with a 3-0 defeat to Nicaragua last night.

After dropping a 2-1 decision to Haiti following a rough welcome in March, a comfortable victory over Turks and Caicos Islands in the Dominican Republic offered hope.

But Nicaragua has come a long way from their shock 2-1 defeat to Belize in the 2013 Central American Cup, and put on a ruthless display, aided and abetted by Belizean carelessness at times.

Richard Rodriguez scored a fine free kick 25 minutes in for the first goal, and a brace within five minutes of the restart put Nicaragua home free.

Haiti plays Turks and Caicos today and Nicaragua a few days from now to settle the group.

After the game the Football Federation of Belize said in a message attributed to Executive Member with responsibility for the Senior National team Marlon Kuylen, “While the outcome was not favorable for Team Belize, we are certain that the experience and exposure given to our younger players will prove fruitful in the very near future. The veterans showed heart and the youths, determination. It’s time to go back to the drawing board and start the rebuilding ‘process.’ It is evident we have a solid core of youths that know the national style of play we have established who we can build around.”

The Federation added, “We are proud of the skills demonstrated by the younger athletes and we are grateful for the guidance, support and mentorship demonstrated by our veterans.Win lose or draw, We are Team Belize!! Thank you Jaguars for representing us with Pride! We also wish our Jaguars safe travels as they return home.”
