By Benjamin Flowers: The National Meteorological Service of Belize has clarified that the weather phenomenon, which caused property damage and rooted up trees in Billy White, Cayo District this morning, was not a tornado.
Breaking Belize News spoke with Deputy Chief Meteorological Officer, Michelle Augustine, who explained that the extreme winds were the work of a powerful, isolated thunderstorm.
“We had what you would call a ‘strong spell’ from that thunderstorm,” Augustine said. “These things happen from time to time, you have a pocket of moisture and instability and then you have a strong thunderstorm.”
She added that the incident was “absolutely” no cause for alarm and that the Met Service does not suspect that level of storm activity will continue.
Meanwhile, residents in the area tell BBN that more than 30 people witnessed the twister, which traveled about two miles before it dispersed.
