Prime Minister explains letter regarding salaries for Ministry CEO’s: ‘It was only fair’

Posted: Friday, July 23, 2021. 10:55 am CST.

By BBN Staff: This week, a leaked letter from Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie showed that Ministry Chief Executive Officers were not subject to the recently-implemented 10 percent salary cut, and Prime Minister John Briceno has gone on record to say that the decision was taken on a matter of fairness.

In an interview with Love FM, Briceno explained that the previous administration had given pay raises in 2015 and 2017; however, when his administration took office, his CEOs were placed on the 2015 salary scale (pre raise). Briceno also said that CEOs were subject to a cut in their allowances in 2020, which prompted the decision to keep them from any further cuts.

“Also because their allowances have already been cut, then it was not fair to cut it again. That is why Stuart Leslie sent out that letter,” Briceno said. “There is no animal farm kinda thing right here, there is nobody that is getting any kind of special arrangement, it is simply fairness.”

Briceno accused certain members of the media of using the letter to try and generate a negative story and lamented that it was irresponsible journalism.
