Prime Minister offers kudos for Olympic athletes representing Belize

Posted: Tuesday, August 3, 2021. 7:12 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The trio of canoeist Amado Cruz and athletes Samantha Dirks and Shaun Gill did not manage any medals at the Tokyo Olympics in their events over the weekend.

But they earned kudos for effort from Prime Minister John Briceño.

This evening he wrote on social media: “On behalf of all Belizeans, we are very proud of the athletes who represented Belize in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”

He told the athletes directly they were “a joy to watch,” (and he was presumably one of the few Belizeans who did as rights issues denied local broadcasters coverage) and added, “we look forward to you and many more athletes representing our beautiful country in future Olympics to come.”

Of the three major international sporting games Belize qualifies for – Olympics, Commonwealth and Pan American – our sole medals remain the bronzes won in 1979 and 1983 in ladies’ softball, a sport restored for Tokyo but off the calendar again in Paris, France, the site of the next Games.

The current games continue through Sunday, August 8.
