Police to treat charges in drug plane case as summary offences; DPP’s office not involved

Posted: Tuesday, November 9, 2021. 2:34 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams confirmed that the charges in the Bladen case are summary – that is, not as serious as on indictment, though the penalties would be the same. The Department’s Prosecution Branch, headed by attorney Alifa Elrington, will thus take charge.

One of the officers implicated in Thursday’s drug plane landing is the assigned bodyguard for the Director of Public Prosecutions, but it was not directly addressed whether her office may not be involved in the prosecution of the case.

Complicating matters is that her husband, former Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations Marco Vidal, is on administrative leave and his entire team who has not been arrested was reassigned within the Department, although the Commissioner was at pains to say there was absolutely nothing implicating the senior cop in Thursday’s events.

The decision presumably does not rule out the DPP’s office offering assistance from attorneys other than the Director herself.
