Former UDP Minister Ruben Campos passes

By Hugh O’Brien: Former United Democratic Party (UDP) Minister, 70-year-old Ruben Campos, passed away on Friday night after falling ill for some time now. Campos, who is commonly known to as ‘Negro’ or ‘Negrito’, was a stalwart of the Orange Walk North and South constituency serving as Area Representative from 1984-93 and from 1993-98.

In the early Cabinets of former Prime Minister, Manuel Esquivel, Campos served as the Minister of Health and Sports, and later was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Education. UDP Party Leader and Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow, noted that in his various capacities in the House and in Government, Campos’ “contributions to the development of our nation were tremendous”.

“As my passion for service thrust me into the political landscape, I would attend every House Sitting for 7 years before I got elected to serve in the House and it would be rare that Minister Campos was not there in support of the UDP Government”, recounted Barrow.

The Leader of the Opposition ended his accreditation to Campos, saying “Your selfless dedication to Party for Country will forever be celebrated as the benchmark for a political life of service. Thank you Negrito.”

Ruben Campos’s death follows the death of his former boss Manuel Esquivel in February and that of Melvin Hulse in April of this year.
