“The Minister of Youth, Sports & Transport – Hon. Rodwell Ferguson and Minister of State in the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Transport – Hon. Gilroy Usher and the National Sports Council of Belize (NSC) expresses heartfelt condolences to the Rodriguez family on the loss of Chris Anthony Rodriguez,” said a press release by the National Sports Council on Wednesday.

“The unfortunate incident regrettably occurred at one of our sporting facilities in San Ignacio, Cayo.”

“The NSC is working closely with the police department in their investigation for justice to prevail.”

Eighteen-year-old Chris Anthony Rodriguez from Santa Elena was allegedly stabbed multiple times by a Cayo Sports Council caretaker at the Norman Broaster Stadium on Tuesday evening during an altercation when Rodriguez and his cousin 17-year-old Keon Rodriguez were leaving after the caretaker ordered them out since they didn’t have a ticket to show that they had paid for the use of the facility.

Rodriguez died early on Wednesday morning at the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan.

Since then, the National Sports Council has come under fire on social media for the charges for maintenance purposes which are levied to users of their facilities.

The family held a candlelight vigil on Wednesday evening in San Ignacio-Santa Elena which ended at the Norman Broaster Stadium.
