By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Mayor’s Association announced today that the association’s president, Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, managed to secure over $36,000 in funding from the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), for municipal development.
Wagner, along with Mayor Gualberto “Wally’ Nunez of San Pedro Town, Mayor Sheran ‘Sharon’ Palacio of Belmopan City, Mayor Earl Trapp of the Twin Towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena and representatives from the Ministry of Local Government, was in Bridgetown, Barbados, this week for the Caribbean Local Government Conference.
In a statement released earlier today, the Mayor’s Association said that, through his interventions and multilateral meetings, Wagner was able to secure funding in the sum of €17,000 from CLGF to advance the institutional strengthening of Belize’s municipal bodies.
“This is significant since our local governments are best positioned to drive local economic development, allowing us to have a more resilient national economy and more inclusive communities, as we continue to recover from the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic. The funding will result in more robust and effective municipality planning,” the Mayor’s Association said.
The association also conveyed its gratitude to the CLGF for its continued support and empowerment, and looks forward to more opportunities to exchange best practices, pool resources, and pursue our shared goals for the advancement of local governments throughout the Commonwealth.
