By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Omicron has been the dominant COVID-19 variant reported in the United States, Belize, and around the world, but it has spawned various subvariants that have caused an increase in COVID-19 cases.
Health officials are now closely monitoring two of the new variants – BA.4 and BA.5.
Data from viral surveillance organization Helix shows that BA.4 and BA.5 now represent up to 7% of new COVID-19 cases in the U.S.
The symptoms of BA.4 and BA.5 include fever, chills, cough, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, nausea, and diarrhea.
Scientists from the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that the variants have been reported in Botswana, South Africa, Germany, and Denmark, among other countries.
Health officials recommend that everyone stick to the usual prevention methods including vaccination against COVID-19 and booster shots.
In addition, the public is encouraged to use high-quality masks in indoor settings.
