Prime Minister claims over $30 million paid to various legal entities in Barrow family under UDP

By Aaron Humes: It has long been a bugaboo under the pillow of the People’s United Party (PUP) – just how much were senior United Democratic Party (UDP) supporters and legal practitioners being paid for legal work for the Government?

A preliminary figure released by Prime Minister John Briceño to Senator Michael Peyrefitte is more than $30 million, of which more than $20 million was for legal fees and the rest to secure payments for clients who had their land acquired by Belmopan.

Barrow and Company – the concern of Senior Counsel turned judge Denys Barrow as well as Senior Counsel Andrew Marshalleck – received the lion’s share at more than $20 million, with Lois Young Barrow and Company taking $5.6 million and Barrow and Williams nearly $5 million.

The question for the Prime Minister is whether Barrow and Company and Barrow and Williams were the go-to firms for land matters and why.

He also wants to know how much these firms made from work for various statutory boards and quasi-Government organizations from the utility companies, Social Security and the Central Bank.

Notably, Prime Minister Barrow was in government and would qualify for the same exemption offered to Senators Eamon Courtenay and Christopher Coye; the letter does not make clear the timeline in which the monies were paid and whether Denys Barrow or Lois Young would have qualified for the same exemptions.
