By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize won 5 medals, 3 gold, and 2 silver, on Day 1 of the U-18 and U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua, Nicaragua.
The Belize team made up of only 11 athletes is in the fifth position in the overall ranking. Not bad for Team Belize considering Costa Rica have 53 athletes, Nicaragua 43, Panama 36, Salvador 22, Guatemala 19, and Honduras 19 as well.
Guatemala leads the medal count with 16 medals, 6 gold, 8 silver, and 1 bronze. Costa Rica is in second with 22 medals, but they only have 6 gold medals. Additionally, Costa Rica has 6 silver and 10 bronze.
Home-team Nicaragua is in third with 4 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze for a total of 11.
In fourth, El Salvador has won 4 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze.
Behind Belize, Honduras is in sixth place with 1 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze and Panama is seventh with 1 gold, 1 silver, and five bronze.
The XXIX U-18 and XXIV U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua continue on Saturday. The games conclude on Sunday.
