Meat Pies price increases in Ladyville business as production cost continues to climb

By Benjamin Flowers: Last week when we reported that Darios Meat Pies was forced to increase their prices due to rising production costs, a large number of our readers said that they were unbothered by the change as they were faithful customers of Ladyville Meat Pies. However, Patty’s Pastries also known as “Ladyville Meat Pies” implemented its own price increase today, as the cost of many of its inputs continue to increase.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) spoke with Sandra Leslie, Manager of Ladyville Meat Pies who explained that, as of Monday, the price per meat pie went up from $1.00 to $1.25. 

“We had to raise it because everything is going up,” Leslie said. “We appreciate the love and support from customers and we’re holding out the best we can for as long as we can.”

Leslie said that the price increase was a difficult decision to make, one that the business tried to avoid by offsetting rising costs by purchasing more affordable ingredients, while still maintaining the standard that customers have come to expect. She stressed that many of the products that they were using as substitutes that still had affordable prices have become scarce, because people and other businesses started switching to those inputs as well.

Leslie also told us that her butane supplier has worked with them to mitigate the impact of the rising cost of butane, and if this was not done they would have felt a greater effect from butane price increases. The situation is compounded by the surging price in the cost of eggs, flour and meat.

The latest data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) showed that for the first five months of 2022, inflation was up by 5.3 percent. The “food and non alcoholic beverages” category was up by 5.4 percent, with meat, cereal products, cooking oils, seafood items, and fresh vegetables and fruits among many other things, showing significant price increases.
