International News: Russian rocket strike kills 15 people on Ukraine’s Independence Day

Posted: Wednesday, August 24, 2022. 2:03 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Ukraine is marking the anniversary of its Independence amidst the Russian invasion.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky said that 15 people were killed today and dozens more wounded in a Russian rocket strike at a railway station, Reuters report.

Ukraine’s Independence day today also marks exactly 6 months since Russian forces began invading Ukraine.

During a video address to the United Nations, Security council, President Zelensky said that Ukraine was “reborn” when Russia invaded and he vowed it would eventually drive out Russian forces completely.

“A new nation appeared in the world on Feb. 24 at 4 in the morning. It was not born, but reborn. A nation that did not cry, scream or take fright. One that did not flee. Did not give up. And did not forget,” he said.

While the public celebrations were cancelled, many Ukrainians marked the anniversary wearing embroidered shirts typical of the national dress.

Zelensky also vowed to recapture Russian-occupied areas of eastern Ukraine.
