International News: Guatemala pledges support for Taiwan, China says ‘political manipulation’

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On August 23, 2022, Guatemalan Foreign Minister Mario Bucaro said that Guatemala will “always support” Taiwan, Reuters reported.

Bucaro met with President Tsai Ing-wen at the presidential office in Taipei.

He said that Guatemala and Taiwan were “like-minded countries” united by a “democratic alliance”.

“Guatemala will always support Taiwan because we have a firm belief in the principles of peace, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” said Bucaro.

The visit come only a few weeks after China concluded military drills around Taiwan in response to the visit of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from China’s Foreign Ministry said that Taiwan was using “diplomatic ties for political manipulation”, which “cannot stop the historical inevitability of China’s reunification”.

Guatemala is 1 of 3 allies of Taiwan in Central America, the other two being Honduras and Belize.
