Minister of Education says (Rules) cannot deprive children of their right to an education

Posted: Wednesday, August 31, 2022. 2:44 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Ministry of Education issued a statement saying that while school authorities have the right to impose codes of conduct and rules for the administration of schools, students cannot be removed or denied admission to school because of the length of their hair.

Many Belizeans have taken to social media to share their opinions, some supporting students’ freedom of expression and others saying that ‘Rules’ are necessary for any institution to function properly.

CEO of the Ministry of Human Development, Tanya Santos shared her view on social media saying that rules are necessary. Santos explained that when she attended Belmopan Comprehensive School, rules were enforced.

Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca commented, “As long as they are not discriminatory, unconstitutional, arbitrary and seek to deprive a child of their fundamental right to an education.”

In the Ministry’s statement today, it noted: “Students have been out of the classroom long enough. It is time for them to begin a new academic year which will be rich with positive learning and life experiences for them all.”

The Ministry further called on partners in education to work together to build a more equitable, accessible, and inclusive education system.
