Altitude win 2022-23 Premier League of Belize Opening Championship over Verdes on 26-penalty-kick shootout

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After a record breaking 26-penalty-kick shootout, Altitude emerged as winners of the 2022-2023 Premier League of Belize Opening Championship over Verdes.

Altitude won the championship 11-10 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 regulation and extra time draw. A number of players took two penalty kicks as all 22 had already taken a penalty kick. So, after 11 from each team had taken a shot, they had to start over until Trimayne Harris blasted the ball over the crossbar following Andrés Orozco’s goal, which turned out to be the strike that claimed the title for the Independence club.

After a brilliant season, things went wrong for Harris who missed his two penalty kicks.

Krisean Lopez could have sealed the championship for Verdes with the Green Machine’s 11^th kick but Altitude’s Colombian goalkeeper Oscar Palomino was superb, as he’d been all season, in stopping his shot.

During regulation time, Verdes got the go-ahead goal from Paraguayan forward Luis Ibarra in the 45^th but Luis ‘Baca’ Torres tied it for Altitude in the 52^nd.

The first match played in San Ignacio on Sunday, November 27, finished 1-1.

Altitude have now completed a very impressive Opening Championship winning the crown, for the first time in their history, after winning the regular season by five points.
