By Aaron Humes: Bishop of the Anglican Diocese Phillip Wright has penned his annual Christmas message to the faithful, focusing this year on the Gospel of John, chapter 1 and verse 14: “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.”
In this one sentence, says the Bishop, lies the roots of the Christian movement – “the reason for the season” as is often expressed around this time of year: “… it is because of such expressed convictions that we are here today celebrating Christmas; attempting to mark a moment in time in honor of when this event, ‘the Word becoming flesh’, took place. Indeed, words still escape us in our efforts to articulate and give expression to what we believe to be a truly remarkable event.”
More than two thousand years later, Bishop Wright says, Christians are challenged to keep alive “this flame of passion, excitement, reverence, and awe amid a barrage of ideologies, trends, and habits that appear to pose a threat to this divine mission.” They are called to remember “the tremendous hope and determination many would have gained in receiving such a proclamation,” despite the challenges they had to overcome.
But they knew – and we should know – that the God they serve once walked among us, and left a trail for us to follow to the ultimate destination. He asks that we pay fresh thought and attention to this phrase – its message and its relevance as the source of the hope, peace, joy, and love we long for, closing with greetings on behalf of the servants of God in the Anglican Diocese and its adherents.
