By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) handed over 29 houses across Belize during the month of December.

“In December 2022, 29 Belizeans from across the country were given keys to their new homes,” said the Government of Belize Press Office in a video summary of those presentations.

“By empowering our people and their families, we build strong foundations for a nation that will stand powerful and proud.”

The MIDH has been working on a Modular Houses Pilot Project as part of their Plan Belize, an ambitious project that promised 10,000 homes during their tenure.

“We are grateful for the dedication of our dedicated team which has worked with focus and passion to ensure the success of our housing project,” the MIDH said.

“There’s much more to come in 2023.”

“At this moment I’m feeling so happy,” Shavonne Myles from Belize City’s Freetown Division said. “I’d like to thank God first, thank the Minister for looking out for me. I really appreciate this home. I’d like to thank Mr. Julius Espat for what he has done.

Also in the Belize District, Cleveland Wade, was ecstatic.

“I thank the Government of Belize and all those who gave their hands building my home. I’m so proud that now I got a place to rest in peace. I have a nice home that I can always depend on,” Wade said.

“Thanks so much. I want to give thanks to everybody. I’m so happy, happy, happy, happy, very happy,” said Jennifer Blease in Caribbean Shores.

“This is a great opportunity for my kids, them. I really thank the Ministry of Infrastructure that has made our dream a reality,” Felipe Guerra said in Belmopan.

“This is tangible. You feel it. You hold it,” MIDG Minister Julius Espat said. “You can take it to the bank after you get your title and mortgage it so that your children can have a better education, or a better life, or to expand the house. That is what we are empowering you; it’s giving you a house and, with time, title to that house.”

Among the 29 who now have a new home are Angela Hemsley in Belize Rural Central, Chelsea Jones and Araceli Guzman in Lord’s Bank, William Xis in Bullet Tree Falls, the Bustillos in San Estevan in the Orange Walk District, Angela Hemsley in the Belize District, Santos Cunil in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Keenan August in Bradley’s Bank in San Ignacio in Cayo Northeast, and Isiah Gillett and Kimberly Mahler in Cotton Tree in Cayo South.

The 29 houses were handed over in the Corozal, Orange Walk, and Belize Districts.
