San Pedro Pirates trounce Verdes 4-2 on Horace Avila hattrick, take over sole lead of Premier League of Belize

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Pirates trounced Verdes 4-2 at their own home field at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio on Sunday in the fifth week of the Premier League of Belize’s (PLB) Closing Championship.

Coupled with the Porta Layola 1-1 draw with Altitude, the San Pedro Pirates now take sole lead of the competition. They overtook Port Layola two weeks ago but were leading only on goal differential. They now have a two-point lead; 13 to 11 points.

Avila had a superb game scoring the opening goal in the 24^th minute and then nailing two more in the 55’ and 88’.

After Avila’s first goal, Verdes bounced back and took the lead before the break on goals by Darrel Myvett in the 39^th and Trimayne ‘Pepa’ Harris in the 45^th +3’.

The Pirates rallied back as the second half started and evened the score on a strike by Mario Chimal in the 53^rd.

Avila was to secure the win with his other goals afterwards.

San Pedro will now face Port Layola in the hottest game of the PLB’s Closing Championship this coming Saturday at home in San Pedro while Verdes will travel to Orange Walk to take on Progresso on Sunday.
