International News: Massachusetts man arrested for allegedly stabbing flight attendant with broken spoon on United Airlines flight

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 33-year-old Massachusetts man, Francisco Severo Torres, was arrested on Monday at Boston Logan International Airport after an alleged attack on a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Boston. Torres is accused of attempting to open an emergency exit door, and disarming the door’s locking handle and emergency slide arming lever.

According to the Justice Department, when a flight attendant approached Torres about the door, he said something before allegedly thrusting towards the flight attendant with a broken metal spoon, hitting the flight attendant in the neck three times. Other passengers on the flight tackled Torres and he was taken into custody after the flight safely landed.

Torres faces one charge of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon. He will remain detained until his hearing which is set for Thursday. United Airlines has banned Torres from flying on future flights.

In a statement, United Airlines said, “Thanks to the quick action of our crew and customers, one customer was restrained after becoming a security concern on United flight 2609 from Los Angeles to Boston.” The airline added that it has zero tolerance for any type of violence on its flights and is cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation.
