By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In celebrating women’s month, around the country, outstanding Belizean women are being highlighted for their dedication and commitment to Belize’s growth and development.

Today’s feature is on Belize’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Dr. Candice A. Pitts.

Dr. Pitts is currently the resident Ambassador of Belize to the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the non-resident Ambassador of Belize to Japan.

Ambassador Pitts also serves as the General Secretary of the Diplomatic Corps in R.O.C-Taiwan.

She was a university professor both in the United States and in Belize and was an elected Councilor of the Belize City Council (2018-2021).

Ambassador Pitts grew up in Port Loyola on the south side of Belize City and was raised by a single mother who was a food vendor.

She accredits her compassion for the disadvantaged and marginalized as well as her work ethics to her experiences growing up in Port and to her own humble beginnings.

As a child, she became fervently studious as, even then, she believed that education is a passport out of poverty.

Her academic industriousness translated to commensurate grades and those grades also merited academic scholarships, without which, she would not have been able to attend Pallotti High School and later St. John’s College Junior College, where she graduated with Honors.

Subsequently, Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, offered her a scholarship to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree, where she graduated summa cum laude.

She later received Assistantships to attain her Master’s Degree from Ohio State University and her Ph.D. from Howard University.

Ambassador Pitts is currently completing her Master’s Degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, for which she also received an academic scholarship.

Ambassador Pitts was also a 2013-2014 Preparing Future Faculty Fellow in the Department of English at James Madison University.

She has published scholarly articles in international journals, such as Wasafiri, College Language Association Journal, Journal of West Indian Literature, and International Research Review.

She is also a scholar and creative writer who has won several literary prizes for her works. She has presented at and participated in numerous conferences and conventions globally, including in Barbados, Japan, France, England, The Bahamas, Jamaica, and Trinidad, and a Women in Foreign Affairs forum in the White House in the USA.

As Ambassador, Dr. Pitts has helped to effectuate the Economic Coorporation Agreement between Belize and Taiwan that reduced tariffs on goods tradable between both countries.

Ambassador Pitts also coordinates several cultural initiatives to promote Belize’s cultures in Taiwan, such as the Belize Culture Months, Belize Cuisine Months, and the Belize Women’s Month.

In addition, Ambassador Pitts works closely with the Central American Trade Office in Taiwan as well as the business community, and she participates in annual Travel Fairs to help facilitate business delegations to Belize, enhance trade and investment in Belize, and promote Belize’s tourism in Taiwan.

At the 2022 Golden Merchant Award Ceremony, the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce awarded Ambassador Pitts the “Most Outstanding Foreign Embassy” distinction, to acknowledge and affirm that “the work the Belize Embassy in Taiwan is conducting is effective, meaningful, mutually beneficial, and serves to strengthen our countries’ bilateral relationship.”

Ambassador Pitts believes in the doctrines of social justice and believes we can all play our part to help improve the human condition and to help make the world more just and equitable for all of us. She ultimately aspires to reach the highest expression of herself, make her contributions to humanity, and live her life pleasing to God.
